You know what I love about the Northern Virginia Womens Business Conference? It’s held at exactly at the right time – just before the flurry of the holidays and just when you’re thinking and planning the next year. This was the third year of the conference, and I’ve been to every one, leaving energized and full information for my future!
Here are my takeaways from this year’s conference:
Get organized: Well, to be fair, that didn’t come from the conference, that’s just at the top of every list I have. (When I can find them!)
Don’t be a wallflower: I’m an outgoing person, but it can be intimidating to be in a roomful of successful, powerful women. This year I made a point of introducing myself and having conversations.
Do what you love: There’s no substitute!
You can’t get there all at once: And you can’t get there without a plan. Even moving across the room takes a plan, without one in business you’re reacting, not acting.
Be a believer/have a believer: Support others and find those who support and believe in you. As panelist Francisca Alonso of AV Architects + AV builders said, “Everyone needs a fan. Preferably a fan club, but at least a fan.”
Be a strong/supportive parent: Many of the speakers mentioned this. Their parents encouraged hard work, exploration, and risk-taking. Be that parent!
Look for synergy: This year I meet several wonderful women whose work is similar to mine. Instead of looking at each other as competitors, we are looking at each other as partners. I already have several meetings planned for after Thanksgiving, which is very exciting!
As you plan your 2012, please mark November 16 for the Northern Virginia Womens Business Conference. In addition, look for other conferences. Especially for solopreneurs and small business people, conferences are a great source of knowledge, networking and energy!
